DANTE’S INFERNO: A NATURAL HISTORY ON SHOW IN BOLOGNA
Nov 16, 2010

A selection of illustrations from the book "L'Inferno di Dante: una storia naturale" is being exhibited in Bologna, at Fabrica Features Store, from 19 November to 8 December.

*********************

Dante's Inferno has been illustrated and commentated by Fabrica for Mondadori.
Over 300 illustrations, all produced by hand using a range of different techniques, complete with comments. A meticulous work offering readers a fresh and original interpretation of one of the greatest literary masterpieces of all time.
Fabrica, faithful to its experimental ethos, entrusted this revisitation to two young British artists, Patrick Waterhouse and Walter Hutton, who took up the challenge with the fresh spirit of two explorers setting out to discover a new world to describe.
The result is a work that subverts the traditional visual representation of this poem. An imposing mosaic of figures, pictures and comments on the characters in the Divine Comedy, organised around a central idea: exploration of the real and mythological vicissitudes in the style and manner typical of natural history texts. While traditional portrayals of the Inferno focus above all on the dramatic aspect of the situations and the pathos of the scenes, the work of the two young Englishmen concentrates instead on the details of the characters and the complex historic and metaphorical universe of Dante.

PRESENTATION OF THE BIG NECESSITY BY ROSE GEORGE
Nov 10, 2010

Fabrica, in collaboration with Fondazione Benetton, has presented the book The Big Necessity by Rose George, former journalist and editor at COLORS magazine.

The Big Necessity: In the early twenty-first century, when surgery can be done microscopically and human achievement seems limitless, 2.6 billion people lack the most basic thing that human dignity requires. Four in ten people in the world have no toilet. They must do their business instead on roadsides, in the bushes, wherever they can. Yet human feces in water supplies contribute to one in ten of the world’s communicable diseases. Human “waste” is a rich, valuable, inexhaustible material, as rich as the world of people who work with it. The Big Necessity is an overdue exploration of a hidden world and of the world’s biggest unsolved public health crisis. It is a cultural, colourful travelogue around a fact of life that is common to everyone, as necessary as breathing, and a source of endless fascination, if only we dare to look.

The lecture took place on October 25th 2010 at Fondazione Benetton in Treviso, Italy.
